Inscription
There are a lot of things you might need for your Inscription:
- First of all you need an A-level diploma.
- If you have luxemburgish nationality, or any other, except german,
and have a diploma from a luxemburgish school, you only need a certified
copy of your diploma.
- If you have luxemburgish nationality, or any other, and you don´t have a luxemburgish or german diploma; or you have german nationality,
and you have a luxemburgish diploma, you have to send a certified copy of your diploma (it has to be translated in german, and the translation has to be certified), a curriculum vitae, and a letter, in which you declare where, and what studies you intend to do, to the Regierungspräsident Düsseldorf (address look down). You have to send this letter as early as possible, because the answer might take more than a month. You can obtain a translation of your diploma at the court of justice for example. It costs about
€ 25. You have better make copies of this translation, get them certified, and send these copies, for you might need your translation once again. You can get more detailed information about all this at the "Thomas Mann Bibliothek" (address look down).
- Second you need a "E128" Formulary from your sick-found (caisse de maladie).
- For several studies, you need to have practical experience before you begin your studies. So you have to inform yourself as early as possible, so that you can use your summer vacation, to make these practical experiences. For more detailed information contact the "Zentrale Studienberatung" (address look down).
- For several studies, you might also need proof about latin knowledge. For more detailed information contact as well the "Zentrale Studienberatung".
- In several studies exists a "numerus clausus"; this means that you have to send a certified, translated copy of your diploma including your notes, a letter in which you declare where and what studies you intend to do, to the ZVS (address look down). You have the possibility to give three different universities in order of your preferences, so that if your favorite university is not free, you might still get a place at one of the other two. The ZVS is then deciding if your notes are high enough for the studies you intend to do. For more detailed information contact the "Thomas Mann Bibliothek" (address look down).
Inscription
Now as you have all these things together, you can go to Aachen for your inscription. First of all you have to go to the sick found, the AOK (address look down), and pass your E111 to them. Here you get a certificate. Then you can go to the "Akademische Auslandsamt"(address look down), if you are not german; or you have to go to the Studentensekretariat (address look down), if you are german. Take your certificate from the AOK along with you. The inscription costs are € 113,60. The certificate of incription allows you to take the bus in Aachen, an the train to Cologne and Düsseldorf for free.
Looking for a room
There are several ways to look for a room:
- If you live in Luxembourg, you might get a room in a students home. These rooms are renovated, about 12 m², and very cheap in comparison with other rooms. To get one of these rooms, you have to contact the CPOS (address look down).
- If you do not live in Luxembourg, or you did not get one of the "luxembourgish rooms", as described above, you can contact the "Studentenwerk" in Aachen to obtain a room in one of the students homes.
- Another way to get a room, is to go to the "Mensa Academica", the "Audimax", or the "Karman Auditorium"(addresses look down). Here you find large pinboards, on which students hang up sheets if they are looking for someone to move into their old room. This way has the advantage that you do not have to pay any brokerage.
- Another possible way to find a room is to look into the newspapers "Aachener Nachrichten" on wednesday or saturday, or into the "Annonce".
- If you still haven´t found a room, you can go to the ASTA (address look down). They might give you other useful hints how to find a room.
- The last way to look for a room should be to go to a real estate agency. Here you always have to pay a brokerage which is normally between two to three monthly rents.
Once you found a room, you should get yourself registered at the "Einwohnermeldeamt". Therefore you only need a copy of your lease (Mietvertrag) and your identity card.
The cost of living
The rents in Aachen are at the moment at about € 150 to € 250 monthly rent for a 25 m² room, but the rents in the students homes, or of rooms that are not so close to the University are much lower. If you live not to far from the university, you do not necessarily need a car. You can also move around by bike or by bus. If you want to go home to Luxembourg, there is no problem to find someone to give you a ride. For lunch you can go to one of the "Mensas". The cost of one meal is between € 2.10 and € 4.60.
