If you are still undecided, take a close look at this document, which tries to give you an overview over the various study possibilities offered in Aachen, reports from experienced students and links to major Web servers on Aachen's schools.
The year is divided in a winter-semester and a summer-semester. The winter-semester begins in the middle of October, the summer-semester in the middle of April. Normally all studies begin in the winter-semester, but in some faculties it is possible to begin in the summer-semester. Between each semester are semester vacations that go from the middle of February to the middle of April, and from the middle of July to the middle of October. During this time you have your exams, or you have to take practical courses. So you do not have a lot of time left for holidays, but just don´t mind. Further the studies are divided in two parts; the "Vordiplom", which is very theoretic and general; and the "Hauptdiplom", which is more specific.
You can also buy a "Vorlesungsverzeichnis" in most of the book shops in Aachen. It costs 5.80 DM, and contains a list of all courses held at the university, so you can look for interesting courses that are not necessarily part of your studies. It also contains a plan on which all the lecture-halls are marked, which is important for the first semester, because your courses will be in different buildings and halls.

The foundations of the main building were laid in 1865. Five years later, on October 10th, 1870, the "Polytechnikum" was inaugurated, and got it's official title "Königliche Technische Hochschule" in 1880.
During the years 1925 to 1932, the TH recovered from the consequences of WW I. But after the National Socialist Party came to power, the good relationships with neighboring schools in Belgium and the Netherlands ceased, many leading teachers were banned, and the number of students at the TH fell below 1000. Research and teaching could only be continued very difficultly during the years 1940 to 1944. After the allied forces took Aachen in fall 1944, first steps to reconstruct the TH were made.
Fast development of natural and engineering science forced the TH to keep step. Numbers of new departments were created in the sixties, such as the phylosophical, medical and economic faculty, and the number of students rose constantly.
This implied that today, the RWTH is one of the largest universities in the world of engineering with an amount of 34.000 students (10% foreign) . The top level research and equipment in this school offers a very good environment for the future students.
