AVL-Choir

One of the oldest student traditions in Aachen is the Aachen Choir. It was founded in 1962 in Aachen by the organist Charles Meyers and the soloist Jean Martin under the name "Akademischer Männerchor". The background was a request from the Luxembourg ambassador Hommel, who sought support for the weakened Luxembourg colony in Cologne during National Day for the "Te Deum" service in the church "Maria Königin". This beautiful tradition has been preserved until today. In 2021, after a long discussion, the Männerchouer was officially renamed the AVL-Choir.

The choir’s repertoire is diverse and varied. Whether traditional folklore or humorous drinking songs, the men’s choir does not shy away from anything. It is especially known for the song "Den Oochener Student". This song was composed in 1991 by Marcel Belche, also known as Bab. To the melody of "Mariechen war ein Frauenzimmer", he wrote lyrics that, based on his experience, describe the "typical" course of student life in Aachen.

In recent years, opportunities have repeatedly arisen to perform outside of student events. For example, there is an annual Christmas concert, and the choir also performs at weddings of former Aachen students. In 2005, under the direction of Pascal Theis, a CD was recorded covering a large part of the songs performed by the choir.
