History

The history of AVL is closely linked to the history of RWTH Aachen University. When RWTH opened its doors in 1870, several Luxembourg students enrolled there. A few years later, in October 1897, these students founded the “Akademischer Verein d’Lëtzebuerger”. Originally a student association, it developed into a central point of student life for many Luxembourg students in Aachen. The statutes were based on those of German and Belgian student associations. In its early years, AVL lived the motto “Rull de Waak” and maintained close contact with other student associations, especially from the Benelux countries.

Depending on the political and economic situation in Luxembourg and Germany, the number of members has varied significantly over the years. During World War II, AVL had to be suspended due to a lack of members until 1952. The war severely affected relations between Luxembourg and German students, which led to a strong separation between AVL and German students during the reconstruction period and for many years after. In recent decades, this tension has gradually decreased, and the former distance towards “Prussians” has largely faded.

In recent years, AVL has maintained a relatively stable membership of around 200 students. Although the structure and practices of the association have changed significantly over time, many traditions—sometimes slightly modernised—have been preserved. New members (“Sales bleus”) undergo an optional baptism involving various challenges and drinking games. AVL also takes part in student tournaments such as the “Tournoi de l’Ambassadeur” and the “Tournoi de Noël”, as well as the relay race from Aachen’s market square to a municipality in Luxembourg. The traditional Aachen male choir trains vocal skills and performs Luxembourg folk songs at official and informal events. Various celebrations such as the Ponttor event and the Welcome Evening foster social interaction and exchange among members. Outside official activities, AVL members regularly meet at the Luxembourg student pub, Café Kaktus on Pontstraße, to relax, eat, drink, or watch football together.

Although student folklore from the early days has diminished over the years, AVL remains an important part of student life for many Luxembourg students in Aachen.
