RWTH - Rheinisch-Westfälische Technical University Aachen

RWTH has more than 44,000 students and is the largest university in Aachen as well as one of the largest technical universities in Germany. It is especially known for engineering, natural sciences and economics and is considered an excellence university.

What can you study at RWTH?

RWTH offers more than 150 degree programs, including traditional engineering fields such as mechanical and civil engineering, as well as industrial engineering, business administration and natural sciences like biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science.

What cannot be studied?

Fields such as design, sports or law are not available. There are also no English-taught Bachelor programs.

Costs

In North Rhine-Westphalia, tuition fees are covered by the state for all students - including international students. You only need to pay a semester contribution (around €300 per semester). This contribution mainly includes social fees, but mostly covers the semester ticket (bus and train ticket).
Keep in mind that tuition is not the only cost: accommodation, food, internet, electricity, etc.

Recognition of the secondary school diploma

According to a KMK decision from 02.06.1995, a "Diplôme de Fin d'Études Secondaires" or a "Diplôme de Fin d'Études Secondaires Techniques" is recognized as equivalent to the general "Allgemeinen Hochschulreife" qualification. anabin.kmk.org

Language

All Bachelor programs at RWTH are taught in German. Some Master programs are offered in English. Depending on the program, a certain language level must be proven.
According to a KMK decision from 02.06.1995, a "Diplôme de Fin d'Études Secondaires" or a "Diplôme de Fin d'Études Secondaires Techniques" is sufficient proof that you have enough German skills to start a degree in Germany. RWTH follows this regulation. anabin.kmk.org
For English-taught programs, a B2 level is usually required. Empirically, the Luxembourg secondary school diploma is often considered sufficient for language proof, but official confirmation is not provided.

Admission restrictions / Numerus Clausus (NC)

Some programs are restricted (require a minimum grade, NC). These programs require an application via RWTHonline or via Hochschulstart (e.g. medicine or dentistry). Other programs are open admission, meaning you can simply enroll.
